Transforming Climate Consultants into Effective Change Agents

Change Management in Action: A Practical Framework to engage Mayors in Climate Action

The Challenge: Bridging the Gap Between Climate Consultants and Mayors

Climate change is an urgent global issue that requires action at all levels of society, including local governments. However, many climate consultants working for NGOs like Climate-KIC face a common challenge: effectively engaging with mayors and convincing them to mobilize resources and take action on climate change.

The root of this problem often lies in the different perspectives and approaches to change held by climate consultants and mayors. Climate consultants, driven by their passion for environmental sustainability, tend to be "leapers" – they embrace change quickly and push for rapid adoption of new policies and practices. On the other hand, mayors, as elected officials responsible for the well-being of their constituents, often prioritize stability and the preservation of traditional values, making them more akin to "tradition holders."

This disconnect between leapers and tradition holders can lead to communication breakdowns, misunderstandings, and ultimately, a failure to achieve the desired climate action outcomes.

The Solution: The Bridge Builders Framework by Systems Leadership

At Systems Leadership, we have developed a unique training program designed to transform climate consultants into effective change agents. As the CEO, I am proud to say that our team has created a powerful tool for understanding and navigating the dynamics of change: the "Bridge Builders Framework."

The framework identifies three primary responses to change:

  1. Leapers: Those who embrace change quickly and push for rapid adoption of new ideas and practices.
  2. Tradition Holders: Those who value stability, heritage, and traditional values, and may resist change.
  3. Bridge Builders: Those who can effectively connect leapers and tradition holders, facilitating meaningful dialogue and driving change in a way that considers the needs and concerns of all stakeholders.

Through our training program, climate consultants learn to recognize their own tendencies as leapers and develop the skills and mindset of bridge builders. They gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives and motivations of tradition holders, such as mayors, and learn how to communicate and collaborate with them effectively.

Program Details: A Scalable, Experiential Approach to Capacity Building

The Bridge Builders training program, designed and delivered by Systems Leadership, is a scalable solution that can accommodate up to 300 participants at a time. We believe in the power of experiential learning and self-reflection, and our program is built around these principles.

Participants engage in interactive workshops, case studies, role-playing exercises, and individual coaching sessions. They explore their own response styles to change and learn how to adapt their approach to better connect with others.
